The Sole Administrator of Agbado- Oke Odo Local Council Development Area of Lagos State, Hon. Sola Akande, has expressed confidence in the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission ( LASIEC ) under the chairmanship of Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips to conduct free, fair and credible elections into the 57 Local Government Councils of the State.
The Council boss made the declaration while receiving the Chairman and members of the Commission who were on an inspection tour of the office of the Electoral Officer of the Commission deployed to the Council as part of the efforts of the present leadership of the Commission to ensure that Electoral Officers operate in a conducive atmosphere.
Hon. Akande assured the Commission that he would ensure that the office of the Electoral Officer was appropriately equipped to enable him perform his duties in a more conducive atmosphere.
Speaking during the visit to the Council, the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips, commended the authorities of the Council for providing a good office accommodation for the Electoral Officer of the Commission.
She, however, urged the authorities of the Council to ensure the provision of other basic necessities that would make the office more conducive for the Electoral Officer and facilitate effective and efficient delivery of service.
In a chat with reporters at the end of the tour to the Local Government Councils visited today, Hon. Justice Phillips disclosed that the Commission would formally write the authorities of the 57 Local Governments/ Local Council Development authorities on its findings.
Meanwhile the Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mr. Olumide Lawal, has stressed that “ there is no end to training”, adding that the Commission had been training its personnel on a regular basis and that it would continue to do so.
Mr. Lawal pointed out that the Commission had been collaborating with reputable training institutions and consultants, including the International Foundation for Electoral Systems ( IFES ), an international organisation operating in over 100 countries of the world to facilitate the entrenchment of democracy and democratic culture to train its staff on election management and international best practices.
On Monday, the inspection tour took the Chairman, members and some management staff of the Commission to Agege Local Government, Ayobo- Ipaja, Agbado- Oke Odo and Orile Agege Local Council Development Areas of the State.
The Commission also inspected the offices of Electoral Officers at Ifako- Ijaiye and Ikeja Local Governments as well as at Ojokoro, Ojodu and Onigbongbo Local Council Development Areas of the State where the Chairman of the Commission, Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips, revealed that the Commission would also organise stakeholders’ fora as part of preparations for the next elections into the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State.
